Best Birthday Party Ever

Ok, ok so it’s only her first birthday party but I’m pretty sure even if Lilia did have a few others to compare it to this one would take the (itsy-bitsy-spider) cake!
Our Itsy-Bitsy-Spider theme was a hit. Lilia pointed and squealed with delight each time another spider decoration showed up, which was in a word, often. Leading up to the party she was signing “spider” and “more” constantly and was keenly aware that something fun was in the works.

Right before the party was about to begin I got Lilia all dolled up in her party dress and we walked out to the living room where last minute party prep was at a fever pitch and as I announced her entrance she literally walked down the hall to the center of the activity and did a full turn like a model on a catwalk as if to say to everyone “look how cute I am.” It was almost more than I could take.
Lilia was so excited to see all her friends and all the kids played really well together. There were a lot of people in a small space so it did get overwhelming a couple of times for kids, grown-ups and birthday girls alike, but for Lilia it was nothing a quick walk outside couldn’t fix.
She was not shy about diving into her cake, her first taste of real sugar, not to mention chocolate! But she was also very good about sharing. She seemed to enjoy feeding other people her cake nearly as much as eating it herself. We sang her the “Itsy Bitsy Spider” song as a warm up to the real birthday song and she really seemed to enjoy the serenade.
At the end of the party we were trying to get a few last family shots and she was so exhausted but all it took were a few more rounds of singing to get another set of smiles. Big surprise: she doesn’t mind being the center of attention one bit.
I have to take a moment to thank my mom, G-Lin for helping us throw the most amazing party ever. The planning and prep were nearly as fun as the actual party, thank you thank you thank you! We could not have done it without Mom, but we had lots of other helpers too. Erin and Mikey, your cake decorating, ribbon and streamer skillz are bar none. Thank you for asking me if there was “anything else” I needed half a dozen times and never getting mad at me when there was “one more thing” each time you asked. Missy, your chocolates were amazing, as beautiful as they were delicious. Geri, Eric you gave me the gift of being camera free during Lilia’s entire party by making sure to capture every special moment for me so I could just have fun. Rose Familia, you did double duty as the after party and clean up crew which was perfect since we all wanted to keep the party going! I can’t thank you all enough.

We broke Pocky in half and stuck them back together at spider leg angles with melted chocolate. They were super yummy!! Thanks, Lilia loves the decorations too, I don’t know when we’ll be able to take them down! :0)

Hi Katrina,
Lilia has loved and reacted to The Itsy Bitsy Spider since she was 3 months old, and now at 1 she signs the whole song along with us! I had so much fun designing the invitations, making window clings, spider cupcakes, spider hair clips (a step you can skip for a boy birthday party!), and spider decorations. For more pics of the decorations head here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/58334488@N00/sets/72157613016169263/
The invitation I had custom designed by a graphic designer on Etsy and she reposted the finished product as a template that she could make work for a boy for only $15! What a steal, right? Check out her item post here.
Lilia has a felt board that sort of served as the decoration inspiration for the cake and window clings. Picture something like this.
Hope that helps and that you have as fun of a party as we had!

I cannot believe I found your website!! My daughter will turn 1 in May and I’ve already started planning–I have been searching the web for ideas to make an itsy bitsy spider party and was beginning to doubt myself, until I found your site! My daughter LOVES this song since she was only a few months old and it’s the only thing that stops her from crying. Thank you for your posts, I will check to see how you did it!

Hi, I am so glad to found your posting, our little one enjoys this song too, you were very creative.
My little one’s eyes glow with glee when we sing this song, however at 9 months he is still not responding with any finger movements or anything like that. Can you please tell me, at what age did your little one respond? Like showing with hands when the song came in? Our little one likes to see us do the action, would be so cute to have him do it for his bday. Would love to hearback from you. Please let me know

Hi Satya,
I’m so sorry I am just getting back to tending to this blog. How was your son’s party? I’m sure he was making some spider signs for the big day! I think Lilia was around 9 months old when she started making some motions but was closer to a year when she could do the whole thing.

Hello! I am planning an itsy bitsy spider party for my twins and was wondering where you got the decorations for the windows.
Thanks!

Hi Tanya, This poor abandoned blog has been so neglected it took me 3 tries just to access my account! I actually made the decorations for the windows with a cool product called Gallery Glass. It wasn’t too complicated and was the only way I could get the exact theme and scale I was after. I drew the design freehand on paper and then just slid them into plastic sheet protectors I already had, used the “Liquid Lead” paint for the outline of the design, let it dry completely and then filled it in with the “Window color” paint. This is a cool article that documents the process in more detail. The cool thing about these are that you can peel them right off and save them for later use. We moved these from the living room to my daughters room where they stayed for over a year but came down to trade out for Halloween decorations, Christmas decorations, etc.
Good luck with your party, such a fun theme!
